Opinions please - root over painted hair or not? (WIP Dumplin Rupert)

Post by LynnW »

Hi all,

I'm working on my 4th baby, Dumplin, and would love some opinions. I was originally planning to root her but then ended up painting her hair and I love how it turned out and am afraid to "ruin" her. I had planned to root because I've never done a full head before and her head is pretty small so I thought it would be a good one to try first. But this is my best hair painting job so far so hence the dilemma... so the choices are 1) root a full head, 2) combi (root more sparsely for dimension) or 3) leave it as is. Thanks in advance!

Best,
Lynn

I don't think you should root a full head over the painted hair. Just my opinion, but I would leave it like it is.

Not matter how nice the painting is, I love rooted hair, it looks like a real baby. The painted hair remind me of a play doll.
I don't mean to be rude, jest my opinion.

I also noticed on E-bay rooted heads get higher bids.

I agree. I always prefer rooted because it looks much more real and lifelike. Well done painted hair is nice, but just not my cup of tea. There are some collectors, however, that adore painted hair and wouldn't want rooted at all and that is wonderful. Have you thought about just doing some rooting on top of the painting in a few areas like on top and in the front?

I appreciate the opinions and welcome them! I am still a beginner and learning.

Yes, combi is definitely one of the options I'm considering, doing a little bit of rooting (versus the whole head). This particular sculpt is a bit challenging also because she looks a bit more doll-like vs. realistic in general.

Maybe a bit of hair on top? like a combination of rooted and painted.

Thanks all who took the time to comment! I decide to leave her hair painted as it seems to suit her. I'm going to have to try rooting a future baby!
