Yeah, it's an idea. I wonder what a doll would look like painted all with gel thinner. Maybe someone has tried this before.

When I started reborning I used nothing but Genesis Thinner. It's doable. You just do a lot more pouncing.

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I have been reborning for 4 years now and never had problems either. Also, I have to add that I have been always extra care with all, as I am asmathic and very allergic to touch some things, (not now, since I was very young for other causes - pets hair, dust, plants, polen, some fabrics like lycra, wool etc, some food...) and my asthma didn't was worse in this 4 years so for the moment, I think some ladies just not take care when reborning. Also I studied arts and in the university and I was extra care too as I worked with toxic products and other kind of 'bad' stuff and never had a problem as I always protected well. I have talk with some coleagues here and I have heard things like bake in the kitchen oven, thing I seriously think is very risky, the fumes can be attach to the food that will cook there later. Or that they baked with the convection oven in the same table where they work, so just with the oven next to them! ,or let the pieces cool down next to them .... things that I am seriously never would do it and is the reason some ladies turn really ill. As I said, I am a very delicate person so I am always had to take much more care, so, I always use gloves to paint, now I use those vinyl one and over them a cotton one to prevent leave marks on the vinyl. I use a good mask too while I paint. I bake the babies in an electric oven (those NuWave you have here) and I use it in another room, mine is just in a place that have doors (that I let open to have it ventilated all time) to a balcony, so I put the oven and close that door of the room and back when I hear the ring. I enter on the room trying not breath, take out the pieces fast and go away, I don't back to pick up the pieces again until at least 10 minutes. I am convinced that not protect yourself with fumes or with a good mask is the reason of some problems.

Sylvia - I do that too! LOL! I take a deep breath before opening my oven and hold it until I close the oven and get out of the room. Sometimes I am bursting by the time I get to fresh air! LOL!
Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I don't reborn so no worry for me. However I have to say that when Laura came down with breast cancer that is the first thing I thought of. Did something used in making her babies cause the cancer? And now we also have Petra fighting cancer as well. Very scary.

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I think this is a very strong affirmation to say... my husband's grandmother died because of cancer and she lived on a village, with fresh hair, no cars or technology... what causes her cancer? the little animals she had on the barnyard? the water of the river? .... Cancer is a big word to enter in a cause for paint or for any other work, every person is different and they can develope it just because it has to happend, for a medication that activated it, for food, for genetic, for thousand reasons, and in other persons not develope. Was founded some cancer death causes in some egiptians kings from more than 2,000 years ago when they investigate medically on their mummies, and then they didn't have all toxic products we have here, so I think is an ill that you can't prevent or know real causes.. I wouldn't wonder it as then you could wonder it for lot other jobs that exists.NadiaK wrote:I don't reborn so no worry for me. Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I really believe I was having problems with my health from reborning, too. Now, I only use air dry... I actually love the results now, even better than the genesis I was using. It's pretty scary, the fumes if the thinners, and then hearing the vinyl too.....

I am reborning 6 out of 7 days a week. The last 4 yrs. Rarely root hair so there is a LOT of painting involved. I'm in the UK so we rarely have porches here, we heat set in our homes, not main oven though. I feel lucky that I haven't had any problems

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
Thank you everyone for your replies and thoughts. It is a lot of food for thought. Being careful seems to be the key thing here, taking precautions and just being as safe as possible. Maybe I was too sloppy in my previous years of reborning and it came back to bite me.

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
So sorry that you have come to that conclusion. All our paint and thinners, instructions, written or verbal, tell us to do this in a well ventilated area. I know for me it's the vinyl odor that bothers me the most. I do have a huge and well ventilated kitchen. Embarrassed to say with 2 ovens I thing 4 of us could be painting , baking and sitting all while enjoying our art in my kitchen. However, I am well aware that my kitchen is not the normal.
I do use the air dry paints through the hot and summer months we have out West. Can't think of turning on my oven then. Can't even go outside either.
My husband has severe asthma and yes, the dust mites are everywhere here. It seems, to us, as we age we must produce more dust mites because I have generations of dust bunnies every week.
I used to need to vacuum everyday but he is some better now and once a week is good with a floor dusting during the week. We have very little to no carpets in our home due to his asthma.
I sure hope your health gets better and that this can become a joyful part of your life instead of a worry part.
Hugs,
Nancy J.

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I'm not using Genesis anymore either because of how I feel when using it. I have been very careful to keep open ventilation in my studio and even had exhaust fans built into the room when we built our house. I would STILL feel bad during days of painting and it is a feeling that I never experience unless I' was painting. Therefor, no more thinners or baking. I 100% believe that baking the kits and using thinners is highly toxic.

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I still use my home oven..I don't have anything else...I do have a large kitchen..and when weather permits I can open a window..but I don't usually. When I first started I used the genesis thinning medium only! it is what genesis was made to be thinned with after all. More recently I have started doing washes with odorless thinner...I had not really noticed any appreciable fumes till then. IT still isn't strong ..in fact..very little odor...what I notice most is that some vinyls are pretty smelly when heated (not all but some).
I too wonder if you wouldn't have a problem if you left off the odorless thinner..especially since you are heating the parts outside your home and are protected from those fumes?

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I really think that practicing with the air dry paints will make you better and better with them, and you will learn to like them more. And if you put a final coat of protection on the top of your paint, it should last a long time. Debbie Henshaw and others who have been using it for years will be able to give more information about that.
As far as reborning causing cancer, I think if you will look at all professions, you will see a certain percentage of people who get cancer. It is partly genetic and may also be linked to environment in some cases. I have read that we all carry cancer cells and certain stresses will cause them to start growing. I am certainly not an expert on it though! But anyway, it is because we know Laura and Petra that we start to wonder about our profession. We would probably ask the same question if a bunch of teachers we knew started dying of cancer, or many people in one neighborhood. It is not a bad question to ask, but I think in these cases it is probably coincidental. I don't believe Laura and Petra would continue doing this if they felt that it was the cause of their illnesses. Being informed is good though, and being careful is good. It does not hurt to be reminded of this, so thank you!

Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
I started reborning 10 years ago, when people still used oil paints... back then acrylic paints were seen as shortcuts to the "real" reborning, which was the one of painting with oils and let them soak for days and days. When genesis came out they seemed like the best of both world, and I only used the genesis thinner which is a nontoxic gel, but I started quite soon to have problems when baking the vinyl... mood changes, a scratchy throat that took a couple of days to go away. One day I overbaked a doll by a few minutes and the smell filled the house. It gave me a terrible migraine and sore throat, and it was easy to make the connection. I never used genesis again. I pulled out my artist grade acrylic paints and started practicing. Acrylics are non toxic (well unless you eat them which is, let's say, uncommon), don't need baking and they last as long as Genesis if you know what you're doing. Genesis paints were developed to be used on canvas, to get the same great results of oils without the neverending drying time. I'm not sure vinyl is the right base for them, since it's an unstable product that reacts to heat.
Re: My Story - Health Risks of Reborning
If you go to Hunnybuns Reborns, you can get Art & Magic Air Borne paint.http://www.hunnybunsrebornsupply.com/paints She also has a chart so you can compare the Genesis colors to Art & Magic.
And here's Sweetie Pie Nursery....she sells Special Care air dry paints and her own thinner. http://sweetiepienursery.storenvy.com/products
There's also Luminaire paint, and LDC paint. And if you go to Debbie's They Never Grow Up Nursery, she sells a great DVD that helps you switch over from Genesis to air dry.
So there's loads of stuff to use out there, and stay healthy.
(It takes 17-30 years for some of the serious health issues to show up, so you may not realize you're reacting to the hot vinyl and the other chemicals. It can accumulate over time in your liver, etc. )

True Sharon L and we have no idea what all we are exposed to environmentally...so why not control the ones you can? but..having said that ... 1 in 3 of us will have cancer anyway...so why not do what you love..that is my answer!

Just don't cook your food in the microwave in plastic, either! We've all been getting daily doses of THAT for years!
