Should reborn dolls look age appropriate to size and detailing?

Post by Ginny W »

I have noticed that many many of the sculpts now that are only about 21-25 inches have huge heads of long hair and seem to be made to emulate way older children. They have them sitting up and playing with toys and kind of like they are toddlers. I was just on FB and seen some of the posted finished reborns ready for ebay and the dolls have huge beautiful heads of hair like they would be at least 2 years old and up and then I see they have either no teeth in an open mouth or two bottom teeth. Babies with little to no teeth don't have full heads of hair this long and full. So has reborns kind of lost the need for realism and more to just a collectable dolly look?

i think it should be up to the artist to make their reborns how they want. I personally like my reborns to look age appropriate but others may want theirs with longer hair or to look older etc.

I like them age appropriate, too. I saw a cute little girl today who had her hair piled on top of her head, but if her mommy had left it down, it would have been touching her shoulders, no longer. She wasn't old enough to have grown it much longer than that. My daughter is from Chile, and her hair grew fast when she was little, but not so fast that it was down to her hips! But it was pretty long when she was 3 years old. She had very long ponytails.

But I guess they call it "artistic license" for a reason. Artists can do as they like. They're dolls, not real kids, so if collectors like them with hair as long as a model's hair, that's OK. It's all good.

I prefer age appropriate too. Even the toddler sculpts look better (to me) when done as very young children but that's the beauty of this art. There is something for everyone.

I posted this as a feeler to see which way is preferred. For me I like to make the sculpt look as much like it's facial features and sizing dictates. I am from the old school of reborning where it started out less dolly and more as real looking to a real baby as possible. Thanks everyone for your answers. It helped me to decide to stay with the way I have been doing things all these years. :toast:

I for sure prefer age appropriate. I can see having thick hair because some babies really born with a full head of thick hair, but I certainly wouldn't make it shoulder length. I usually like to cut the hair to the ear or just below the ear.

I like age appropriate also and I have noticed quite a bit lately is the way people are rooting the eyelashes on the awake reborns. Apparently collectors don't care about that either.

I hear you there. I see so many finished dolls on ebay where the reborner rooted the eyelashes up in the eye crease and not in the upper eyelids. Pet peeve of mine! :bash:

I think and it is only my opinion but some of the collectors really need to start taking a better look at what they are buying.

Sometimes there are things you don't see until you get it out of the box, or see it at someone else's home.
