That's because your work is legendary Melissa. Our small animals we did for Ping were one piece no seam. The small ones are nice for that.

The molds are made of silicone and most people aren't trying to get a million dolls out of a mold. Most of these dolls are limited to a few that's what makes them so special to the mommies who collect them like myself. If your trying to attach limbs ecoflex 20 should work or dragonskin too as stated above but it will take some patience, research, and skill to attach something heavy like that and also make it flush afterwards. I don't think the lady was irritated with you if you were on Facebook I've seen people get literally ignored or told off but you seem to have some sort of knowledge to what your doing this is why I think you were offered this valuable advice. I'm not to sure there is a cheap, easy way to make these dolls to be honest, not if you want quality. I have seen many great artists over the years start fast with cheaper ways but crash and burn. You have to also think who your selling to. How your going to take that money and sell a product that won't fall apart. Silicone is tricky and can be contaminated then your left with a person who made a emotional investment in a doll they love that they may have to trash. And PayPal , most credit card companies and banks will side against you and wipe out your accounts and you crappy dolls will leave you with no one to sell to. Just something to think about. Can't wait to see what your working on I love all dolls. I have been researching yrs the Silicone making process and have just only started painting because to do things right it's expensive. ' research, research, research' from a experienced starving doll artist lol.

Exactly, Tiarra! :toast: Well written. Quality over quantity is what is important. There are loads of crappy dolls for sale....no shortage there.

I'm trying to think outside the box and have both Quality & quantity. My main selling point will customization. If you don't mind a couple seams, I can make just what you want in a couple weeks, maybe even days. My goal right now is to break even until I can get the quality up high enough. I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to match the AAA quality dolls... but if I can reach A quality, I'll be elated. ^_^ Each individual part of my prototype came out as "A" quality (IMHO), though the terrible mis-match between pieces drags it down considerably... though still considerably better than some of the garbage I've seen selling on Ebay for $500+.

I still don't understand why people buy mangled blobs of silicone with random splatterings of paint for $500+.

Trust me Mike, most of us don't buy those "mangled blobs". But there's no accounting for taste. Remember, #1 is quality. #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, etc. is quality. Somewhere down the line, maybe #57, is quantity.

Lol, it only takes one person to buy it... Doesn't matter if "most" do not... just matters that One does. Though, I'd feel great shame even putting some of those things up for sale. There are limits to quality using my current process. I'm researching methods of improving that to levels beyond where I'm at now. Now, what I can produce is, IMHO, still pretty good, each individual piece comes out great, but there will still be seams, and connection points. But I believe there is a market for "Great, but less than perfect" quality.

And I already have a couple ideas to get a completely smooth, completely seamless dolls using my current molds, with a little ingenuity. ^_^

If everyone only caters to the "true collectors" who will help those that only want just one?

Unfortunately ... China has the market on cheap, affordable, decent looking dolls that are alread ypainted and they are poured in one piece. Though most Chinas sculpts are stolen sculpts... people still buy them because China sells them for $100-300. I can appreciate and understand your excitement about your new project. Especially since we started out wanting to mold and cast your way. Our 3D printer and software are mainly only used for FUN non doll related items now. With so many people sculpting, molding, and casting right now, there isn't a shortage of low to medium quality dolls for small amounts of money. People tend to want a doll cast in one piece because most collectors are heavy players also. They want ultra realism to the point many are now casting with drink and wet systems, soft tummies, hard skull like additives in the heads, and armatures for posing. If collectors are looking for a portrait doll of someone they know, they tend to go to a high quality, experienced portrait sculptor and then have it cast. Who will help those that only want just one??? Ashton Drake. They make a decent quality silicone doll for collectors for a few hundred dollars and same with China. Its sad... but mostly the way people go now because of so many overnight pop up artists.

Ashton drake sells vinyl for $100-300, not silicone. Or partial silicone with cloth bodies. Not the same thing.

Denise is one of the best in the industry! Her work is and always has been top quality.

I agree with her, all the pourers I've talked to use a glove mold. Some pour in one piece, others pour the head and body separately and fuse them together. It CAN be done and has been over and over. :D

There are certain ways your sculpt needs to be positioned so that the molding and pouring process is easier, though.

(Didn't realize there was a second page of responses lol, this post is redundant. Sorry!)

Ya, I'm using a completely different sculpting and molding process than "normal". I'm trying to create a whole new way of looking at this industry. ^_^ I need to understand certain aspects about how it's done now to make sure my method incorporates the expected quality.
