Help! How to make mohair look nice and not frizzy?

Post by Lori_Ivanovic »

I have a head that i would like the mohair to look more straight and baby like. The mohair looked really nice but seemed to change as i rooted it. I had a wave to it and now i think it just looks kind of frizzy. I looks wonderful if i wet it but i want her to go to her new mom with the baby look. Does any one have a good product that make the hair lie flat? I have tried some shine sprays but that isn't right either. ANyone use gel or mousse?
ANy help would be great,
Thanks LoRi

I bought this one on ebay and really liked it :D

I wouldn't use gels/mousse as it would attract dirt/dust and wouldn't stay nice, IMO

Oh thanks Nancy. I almost sent you a message but you got here first. I have to ship her today so i won't be able to order it. Seren said that she uses the conditioner you get in the hair color box so i will try that.

have a great day.

Get some Silken Child at a cosmotology store and spray her head, comb straight and put a small hairnet on for shipping so it won't get mussed.

Lori, are you sure to have rooted the hair from the cut end of the lock? (Meaning that the end that is cut from the goat is the end that needs to be rooted into the head). There is some weird phenomenon that happens when rooting nice hair backwards. The hair will just be frizzy if the tips of the ends are rooted leaving the cut ends exposed.

Good luck!

(ps, I sent you an email that I need a reply on  )

Deb is correct. I am always checking my hair and making sure I have the cut end being rooted.
If one puts the hair in backwards it acts and looks like teezed or backcombed hair.

Just sent me the head, I will fix it Lori!

Ohhh i just tried the leaving the conditioner in the hair (the kind from hair coloring) and it really worked and looks nice. I suppose the new mommy will have to do the same.
Thanks ladies

Just for the future I have a small spray bottle that holds only about 3 ounces of fluid. I fill it about 2/3 of water (not tap unless you have a softner as hard water will leave mineral deposits in the mohair) I then put a few drops of hair conditioner in it and shake followed with afew drops of a high quality hair gel product and shake it to mix it all in. I spritz this on the mohair and it takes the frizz and it's great for holding in curls. The hair doesn't get as messy when handling the doll either!

This is so true, I do the same. When I've sealed the hair and it is dry and cured I wash the hair with baby shampoo. I gently dry it and put in leave-in conditioner. It works beautifully and holds the hair style. Not like gel but it keeps it laying down and soft.

I make my own concoction which I use while rooting and to finish up with.
I mix about half a small spray bottle with water, then add 1/4 of Silken Child conditioner, and 1/4 conditioner from the tube that comes with hair color. The hair color conditioner is the only one that really seems to work. I never rinse this out, and I put it on over and over. I gently brush it while wet with a soft toothbrush. I makes it nice and silky -- and I'm a center rooter so far. I just can't root from the cut end.

I've used some Children's Leave-In hair detangler, and it works well. You can also mix up some water and conditioner (whatever you use for your own hair), and spray it on. After I'm done rooting, I spray it all down really well, brush it and style it into what I want, and then leave it to dry completely like that. Then, it holds the style really well, and has no problems with frizz.

Now, some mohair is quite a bit frizzier than others. I mainly use Slumberland kid, and I'm not sure how well my method would work with other suppliers. I've used it with Delta Dawn and Slumberland yearling, but that's it.

And as the other ladies said, rooting from the end helps a lot. If you root from the center, it's just going to make it that much harder for the hair to lie nicely; not impossible, but harder.

Two words. Olive Oil. Straight from the kitchen, Olive Oil. Pour some on your hands, rub together to warm up. Just rub it on the hair, let it set, then rinse it out.
Next time you're in your grocery store look in the "Ethnic" hair care section. I use an olive oil based hair conditioner from a brand called "African Pride" "Olive Miracle". I just dilute it with water and it works wonders.

A cheap "Special Reborn" leave-in conditioner receipt:
1 Bottle of any regular baby detangler
1 touch of Olive oil
1 Squirt of baby lotion
Shake well before each use
Disclaimer: Try a small test piece. Keep oil away from clothing. I'm not responsible for any damages. :dunno:
